Goodbye Raymond Burke

The Vatican announced the promotion of pro-life Archbishop Raymond Burke to the Vatican Signatura (its Supreme Court). This means that he is effectively silenced in telling Catholic politicians who they should put on the American Supreme Court - just in time for the election. I knew I liked this Pope. If I recall, then-Cardinal Ratzinger was not too thrilled about the role the Church came to play in the 2004 campaign regarding Kerry and abortion.

If politicans claim to be Catholic, they should act that way. No one can be both Catholic and "pro-choice." The Archbishop did his job well and he will be missed.

Peter, you're wrong. Then-Cardinal Ratzinger was unhappy with what Cardinal McCarrick did in keeping from the bishops the letter that Ratzinger wrote making it clear that Catholic pols who publicly support abortion should be denied Communion. If it was otherwise, he would not have promoted Archbishop Burke to the position that he did.

Yes, Robert, Archbishop Burke's voice will be missed in the U.S. And not just by those of us who agree with him. Just think -- who else will the media have to kick around for saying the things he did?

What Burke did not understand was that there is a difference between advocating abortion, which is sinful, and allowing it to be performed without criminal penalty.
