As reports of GOP hopeful Mike Huckabee's disturbing brand of populism become known, let's look on the bright side:

If Huckabee gets the nomination, could he become the Last Whig?

What's not to like about Huckabee? He is a FAIR tax supporter who seems to have a real draw in the "Christian Left," the space which Carl Milsted identifies as being in the "Upper Left." Even his social conservatism is a bit more tinged in reality than the anti-freedom views of his fellow Republicans (including Ron Paul) who would eliminate equal protection rights against the majority voters at state level in order to reverse Roe. At least Huckabee knows that abortion must be solved nationally. As for the other social issues (gay rights, evolution and the media) there is nothing the right wing can really do to stop progress, even with a President Huckabee, so I am not concerns about his views in this realm.

I would disagree that the Abortion issue has to be decided nationally. Indeed, I wonder about a so-called "Pro-Choicer" who doesn't recognize that the issue should be decided not nationally, but individually. And then you've got guys like me and Ron Paul, who are pro-lifers that would have the issue decided individually.

Huckabee certainly isn't the worst of the candidates, though I wonder at times if his new stance on the Iraq War isn't deliberately designed to split the Republican antiwar vote.
