Jay Leno and Ron Paul

If you didn't see it last night, Ron Paul was amazing on Jay Leno's show. Link is here. Also, I agree with the author's analysis; while I like and respect the folks at Cato, Dr. Paul has done more in the last year to promote the ideas of liberty than any DC-based think tank or organization ever has. Ron Paul is truly a rock star (just ask the Sex Pistols!).

Comments

While I am a Ron Paul supporter, I was disappointed with Dr. Pauls' response on one important issue. When Leno asked him about abolishing the income tax, Ron Paul said America did fine before it, but then Jay said but we didn't have paid roads, etc. I think, considering the lack of knowledge on taxation of most Americans he needed to take that opportunity to educate Jay and the TV audience that the income tax does not pay for roads, the military, or other important government functions, only the national debt and that we can pay off the debt by other means once the income tax is repealed. I know this stuff, and other Ron Paul supporters know this stuff, but most Americans will think it is not possible because they still believe the government needs to be funded and most think it is funded with the income tax. Missed opportunity, it pains me to say.

Well, the thing is that, unless we were to repudiate the national debt, income tax or not, the interest will have to be paid. I doubt an outright repudiation of the national debt would be a good idea, and is a last resort for the event where the government is completely insolvent.

Besides, unless income taxes are NOT just as vulnerable to "raiding" as the social security taxes are (and the general fund not accessible for the purpose of paying the interest on the debt in the event the income tax is insufficient), the question of which money goes where is kind of a moot point.

Free-for-all (frfr-ôl) -- n. A disorderly fight, argument, or competition in which everyone present participates.
