January 03, 2008Who is "We"?Micah Tillman makes some interesting observations on our political creed, although I think he underestimates the power of aggrandizement in political office and the inherent desire to carry out the moralistic desires of the masses. This is an interesting start, however, and I would be interested in how these principles can be expanded into the largest sector of American life, the workplace. The exploration of issues, consent and authority immediately come to mind, as do the various sectors involved, which include ownership/management, employees, suppliers and customers. While some of these relationships are clearly voluntary at first blush, some are not so voluntary as we would like to think, especially in local markets. Add the interplay between business and government and the relationships become truly interesting - especially when politics is used as a surrogate for the market. Whether we believe it should happen or not, the fact of the matter is it does, which raises the question of who the "We" is in his creed. Is it America at large or just those of us in the CLC? -Michael Bindner Return to the Free Liberal Homepage |
