Repealing Economic Laws

by Richard A. Cheatham, Press Media Group, LLC

There’s a lot of talk about, and political pressure to raise, the legal minimum wage these days. That move is supposed to help those employed at the very lowest levels of the workforce. Opponents say a higher minimum wage will cause many of those lowest paid workers to lose their jobs, as the money employers have to spend for employees just won’t go as far. Proponents say that won’t happen, that no one will lose their jobs...employers will just have to come up with that extra money some how.

I say, if we accept the position that raising the minimum wage will help those receiving the lowest incomes, then why not help them a lot rather than a little. An increase from $5.15 to $6.65 is being proposed. I say, let’s raise the minimum wage to $50...no $100 an hour! That will really help the lowest paid workers! And no one (according to the proponents) will lose their jobs. Heck, let’s go to $500 an hour and we’ll eliminate poverty at the same time! This is wonderful!

Don’t you think all people are equal and that every man, woman and child deserves the respect that comes from a decent income? Come on...we can do this if we all stick together!

Why has no one thought of this before? It’s brilliant! Well, I guess it’s brilliant...maybe it’s brilliant. Do you think $500 an hour is too high for the minimum wage? You really are a stingy cuss! Why would $500 an hour be too high? How the heck would you know?

Who would know and how would they know? By what criteria? Is this just a numbers guessing game? Pick one out of a hat? Is there a magic formula where the minimum wage could and should be raised up to a certain figure, but not above that number because it would somehow be bad? How would you define “good” and “bad” anyway? If there is such a formula, why is it being kept a secret? There must be some very smart leaders who know these answers. Makes you proud to be an American to know we have such brilliant leaders.

I say let’s mandate by law (meaning get the guys and gals with guns and badges to use force and threats) that anyone who pays employees less than $1,000 an hour must be punished. That sounds like a good society and a very healthy economy to me! Free people voluntarily making agreements with each other are ignorant and evil. Force is the answer. Freedom is bad. We can all be rich!

Why didn’t we think of this hundreds of years ago? People are so stupid! The laws of economics can be anything we say they are just by passing laws.

Wait a minute, $2,000 an hour might be better. Wait...why stop there?
