President Bush Names Social Security Reform One of Top Domestic Priorities
Washington, D.C.-Students for Saving Social Security (S4), a non-partisan group with over 4,000 members, was re-energized today by President Bush's comments on Social Security. In an interview with NBC's Brian Williams, Bush commented that the projected shortfalls in Social Security and Medicare make up one of the biggest challenges in our domestic agenda.
“The unfunded liabilities inherent in Social Security and Medicare” make up one of “the two biggest challenges that I would like to see solved in the next two and a half years,” Bush told Williams. Since his re-election in 2004, President Bush has worked to help younger workers set aside some of their savings in personal retirement accounts.
S4 founder Jonathan Swanson reacted to the interview: “Young people are thankful for those leaders who consider the impact of today's decisions on our generation. People currently entering the workforce are paying into a system that has become expensive and ineffective.”
President Bush went on to explain the demographic changes affecting the program, and he called for bipartisan cooperation. “Baby Boomers are retiring, fewer people are paying into the system, and the system is going broke. And it's going to require both Republicans and Democrats coming together to reform these systems so that they can keep their promises.”
“The resolve of President Bush, Treasury Secretary Paulson, Senator DeMint, and others provides inspiration to our generation,” added Ryan Lynch, S4's Outreach Director.
“S4 has been disappointed by members of Congress who have ducked the issue of Social Security,” continued Swanson. “We are delighted that President Bush will continue to lead the charge for reform.”
S4 is a non-partisan, grassroots organization on college campuses advocating for Social Security reform through personal ownership. With chapters in all fifty states, Students for Saving Social Security is the largest student group dedicated to informing and mobilizing young Americans to advocate for reform. # # #
