Quixote’s Ghost

One of the great things about life in the 21st Century is that just about anyone can promote just about any idea on the Internet, from the most pedestrian campaign for dog catcher to the most loopy of ideas. They are, in a sense, all equal.

So there’s this proto-movement in Vermont, which feels far into the loopy camp. Some folks in the Green Mountain State wish to secede from the US. As a person who around tax time would like to secede from both the US and Virginia, I’m immediately sympathetic to our maple-syrup brothers and sisters up north. However, short of worldwide nuclear holocaust, I’m having a hard time imagining how Vermont could actually pull this off.

Thankfully, I don’t detect any hate in their message, unlike other separatist movements that have come and gone over the years. Apparently, this hearty band simply wants to chill – literally and figuratively -- in a state whose lineage is somewhat controversial, having once been a part of the NY colony.

Quixote never gets Dulcinea, but we do have to admire his devotion.

-Robert Capozzi
