June 02, 2005TFL Update: Send the Free Liberal to PressDear Readers, The Free Liberal is gearing up to go to press for the 8th time. For two years we’ve carried on, printing our little paper, consistently increasing the quality of our content, and fine-tuning our message. Our volunteer team is working hard, and will continue to work hard, but we need your help to make The Free Liberal a lasting success. We are slowly establishing The Free Liberal in Washington as a credible alternative whose ideas are as valid as the old establishment magazines such as National Review on the right or The Nation on the left. Perhaps we harmed ourselves by starting out as an activist publication, without big money behind us, but by taking this path we have been able to develop a voice that is truly new and different. Our message is really quite simple: we do not have to give up our freedom in order to make the world a better place, and we do not have to sacrifice our communities to have liberty. It is a radical message in a place like Washington, DC, where the political powers want to divide us by suggesting that impossible tradeoffs stand before us on all sides. Our transpartisan outlook allows us to talk to people about their concerns and let them understand our positions without being threatened by demanding that they buy into our message immediately. We consistently see people on all sides of the political spectrum finding our articles challenging and fascinating. Moreover, our business model of distributing our publication free to the public allows us to reach people who are interested in politics, but are unlikely to buy a pro-liberty magazine while browsing the newsstand. We are standing on the frontline of the battle of philosophy. This is a costly position, as we cannot generate revenue from sales. We are about to launch a new phase of the project – Metro Outreach – where we will deploy outdoor stands to Metro stations around the city. We have our first five stands on order and we hope to buy more stands for each new issue until we achieve total coverage. This project will tremendously boost our presence and provide real credibility as a publication. To complement this, we are always working to get onto college campuses in the DC-area. College students are open-minded – the perfect audience for our publication. But this is one of the toughest battles, because colleges (which are supposedly for free thought and open debate) simply do not want publications which they cannot control on their campuses. We are preparing to set up several campus groups that will have the standing to challenge these prohibitions. Alas, all of our efforts are hindered by our lack of capital to go to press and buy stands. I am personally throwing in a couple hundred dollars into this issue. Several of our board members will be doing the same. Please consider adding your support to theirs and together we can give The Free Liberal the proper support it requires to make a difference. Please click here to show your support. Cheers,
P.S. Every donor who gives greater than $10 will be added to our subscriber’s list to receive copies of The Free Liberal each time it goes to press. Return to the Free Liberal Homepage |
